Ideally you will start planning the translation during the earliest phases of the project; preparing for the translation from the beginning will guarantee the best possible result. Use my general instructions to prepare the translation.
Applications should have text, images, graphics, and icons in the form of resources, which are loaded during program execution as they are needed.
The code should be designed to reference different resource libraries depending on the chosen regional configuration.
Do not worry if you did not plan for localization, the software/website can be successfully localized; regardless of whether it is in beta phase or in its final version, it can be localized. It will simply take longer and require more work.
Instead of translating entire documents, decide what information your target audience (customers, sales team, shareholders, etc.) really requires. Are there redundancies or sections that are not applicable to foreign clients? You should only translate the relevant sections of existing documents; or even better, produce shorter documents, and translate those.
Because the writing style, semantics, word choice, paragraph length and many other parameters will change depending on the desired use. It could be a brochure, a catalogue, a speech, a website, a newspaper article or a presentation. Is it aimed at doctors, homemakers, technicians, men or women? All of these audiences will require a different writing style.
